Image of the week titled 'Punk Girl VS General O'Hare'

This is my latest t-shirt concept titled 'Punk Girl VS General O'Hare'. I am trying a different style, something more bolder and fuller design.
It has been now a few days over 1 year since my sister and I launched Kalman Lee the brand and we believe it's the first of many years and hopefully more sales in our t-shirts and my artwork.
Last week I submitted 3 of my t-shirt designs to Threadless to see how well they would hold up to our artists/designers/illustators and after 7 days of voting I am now waiting on the results...
but thank you so much to everyone who voted for me.
I have also more of my artwork for sale on my Etsy account, so please feel free to check it out as they all make great christmas gifts or stocking fillers.

Image of the week: New Sketches!!!

Hi all,

Wow!!!... I can't believe it's December already! This year has just gone so fast.

Anyway.... This week's posted image is of some of my recent sketches. These sketches are just some ideas that I am playing around with and some might make my next t-shirt range.

I can't believe that next week it will be a year since my sister and I launched Kalman Lee the 'Brand'.... but what a great year it has been! With 2 t-shirt ranges launched, 2 exhibitions of my artwork (one being my first ever), having the awesome Melvin Odoom and the ever lovely Laura Whitmore wearing my t-shirt designs on their MTV show (MTV Digs), having the amazing experience of giving the likes of Madonna my first t-shirt from my second design range, as well as Lily Allen, The Ting Tings and others enjoying my designs.... my what a first year!!!

A lot of these incredible things that happened this year would not of happened without the amazing support and help from my big sis (and business partner) and not to miss our support from my very gorgeous girlfriend, the rest of our family and of course my friends.

Another bit of news is that I have some new items up for sale on my Etsy account that would make great Xmas gifts or stocking fillers... so check them out at: http://www.kalmanlee.etsy.com/
Also my t-shirt designs on my website are especially great Xmas gifts.. you might want to be in fast as our stocks are running out (they're limited editions): http://www.kalmanlee.co.uk/

Well that's it for now but thanks again for all the support and I hope you are looking forward to more of my designs next year!!! :)

Images of the Week: Emtpees T-Shirt Mock Ups!

Hi All,
To help boost my sales and fan base I have started to upload my designs on to other review websites to test my old and new designs and also to get some feedback.
So far I have had some really great feed back and it helps a lot to get other people's opinions so I can create more effective t-shirt designs.
I have attached some of my Emptees submissions with the reasonings behind the images and the mock ups that go on the site (one with the lovely Laura Whitmore wearing Japanese Girl):
www.emptees.com/people/69441-kalmanlee

On other news, next month is my birthday and on the same day last year Kalman Lee (me) was launched as a t-shirt brand...... please if you can't buy me a gift at least buy a t-shirt:)
Cheers!

Image of the Week: New Bag Design & More Button Badges

Hey Everyone!!!
This week's images are my new bag design and badges.
The first image is my new bag design that is a put together kit of me, just like those model kits kids have:) I wanted to come up with an image that would show my personality, skill, what my business is (t-shirts), be something different and funky all at the same time!.. I hoped it worked.

The second image is my newest badge design titled 'Lil Bot'. This image is the first design of many potential ones for my up and coming kids t-shirt range, but we wanted to test out the new design first on a badge... Let me know what you think... ok?

The final image is the first badge design I did and yes it could be yours at a great price... actually both the badges can be purchased for an awesome low price from my Etsy account www.kalmanlee.etsy.com and very soon my new bag design will be for sale on Etsy too. So check out my Etsy shop because these items make great Christmas stocking fillers.

MTV Presenter Melvin Odoom wearing more of Kalman Lee t-shirt designs!!!

Hey all,
Just received these awesome photos of the MTV Digs presenter team with Sway and Melvin Odoom in the MTV Digs studio. In both of these photos Melvin is wearing some of my recent t-shirt designs and if I say so myself looking good in them too:)
These t-shirts can be purchased from my website: www.kalmanlee.co.uk and I also sell my images and just from a few days ago badges on my Etsy account: www.kalmanlee.etsy.com
Check it out!!!

This Week's Image titled 'Ophelia'

This week's image is dedicated to my lovely girlfriend's niece Ophelia.
I wanted to do something nice for Ophelia's recent birthday as I couldn't celebrate with her because I am on the other side of the world and since I don't have any nieces of my own she is the closest thing to one for me.
Ophelia is very beautiful but very cheeky(just like her aunty).
Seeing that I couldn't be there on Ophelia's big day, I decided to design up a personalised birthday card just for her with a cartoon character that looks like her.

This Week's Image titled 'House of Rock'

Hi all,

This week's image is titled 'House of Rock'. I have been wanting to design another music themed image for a while.

The other day my mum was reading to one of the kids she looks after, the children's story book of the old woman who lived in a shoe. At the same time I was trying to practice my guitar playing and then it hit me - to swap a shoe for a guitar.

New Image of the Week: New Zealand Culture

This week's image is titled 'New Zealand Culture'. Since my return to New Zealand, I thought it was about time I designed an image of my home country's culture. Even though I am not maori, I love their story telling and their amazingly different cultural artwork.

The face is my own version of a maori tiki which is commonly known as a good luck charm. The tiki is also considered a symbol of fertility. Assumed to be clear thinking, perceptive, loyal and knowledgeable, (often worn on a necklace) the wearer's strength is their character. The Tiki is a talisman to the Maori people, and has been regarded as a good luck charm from the ancient times. The Maori believe the Tiki represents the unborn human embryo. The most valuable tikis were carved from greenstone and were handed down through the generations as treasured possessions.

The reason for the pattern in the background is because the maori's were known for making fantastic patterns, sometimes from weaving with flax.
The maoris are legendary for wood carving and so the first image that I have attached above is my version of a wood carved tiki with a traditional coloured (black & red) pattern. Then the next image below it is the same image but I have added a bit of Kalman funk to it.

New Image of the Week: Bubble + Squeak Pets

This image contains the new business card designs for 'Bubble + Squeak Pets' pet store that is situated in Christchurch, New Zealand.

I was approached by the owner of this pet store to design a whole new identity for his shop starting with logo, business cards, email templates, website etc.

The brief he gave me was to of use the colours black and yellow, something cute, bold and which of course stands out.

News Update and Q&As about Kalman Lee the Brand!

Hi all,

Just thought I would give you an update of what I have been doing recently and some more info into Kalman Lee the Brand with Q&As below.
Well most of you know if you have been reading my posts that I am currently in Christchurch, New Zealand. I am putting together a business plan so I can approach the New Zealand government for funding. If successful it will help shift production to downunder and will help us launch a kids t-shirt range as we have had a huge amount of people interested and waiting for his to happen for quite a while. With producing our excellent products from downunder we can hopefully sell them at a better price for everyone and keep the same amount of high quality we guarantee with the Kalman Lee brand.

A few weekends back some of my artwork was exhibited at the 'Beacondale House Party‏' with a number of other very talented artists and yesterday I had found out that I have been asked to have some more of my t-shirts exhibited at 'Margin London' early next year! I'm very excited because it's an industry only trade-show for buyers and press and it looks like it gets really good coverage.

Also I now do commissioned artwork..... so get in contact if you want something designed, my prices are very competitive for the current market.

So that is all the recent goss for now and below is some info about Kalman Lee the brand which I've been pulling together for our friend Rassami who is helping us with our PR... enjoy!

What is KALMAN LEE? Kalman Lee is my name and all the designs/illustrations from concept to finished artwork come from me.

What does KALMAN LEE do? We produce high quality wearable art in the form of t-shirts and artwork with original designs/illustrations. What is “illustration art”? It is someone's concepts drawn or designed for others to appreciate.

Who are your clients? People who enjoy wearable art or appreciate good designs/illustrations at low cost but at the same time receiving high quality goods. What are examples of your work? My examples come from what I see or read about, putting two and two together to bring out a new concept or way of thinking e.g. my recent image titled 'Ballet Tree' comes from the love my girlfriend and I share for the amazing shapes some trees have, almost forming human forms and at the time I recently saw my first ballet which performed a scene from Mid Summer's Nights Dream. In which the excellent dancers movements and poses reminds me of when wind blows tree branches and the forms they make.

Why KALMAN LEE, how did it all start? Well.... I have to say it is all thanks to my sister who is also my business partner. One weekend I got a call saying she had an idea that she wanted to run by me, she goes on to tell me she wants to go into business with me selling my designs/illustrations as wearable artwork on t-shirts on the web. Her only catch was that our company had to be named after me. So we got in touch with some web designers to see how we could get running and what we would need to do. Also at the time both my sister and I were working for MTV in London so we were spreading the word around. When we launched our website we had good advertising as we had two presenters of MTV UK (Laura Whitmore and Melvin Odoom) wearing our first range on their shows.

What is the KALMAN LEE creative process? How do you work? Well... everywhere I travel to, I always carry a small sketch book just in case because I constantly have ideas so need to get them down. If I have a concept that could be something good, I will sketch it out a few times to get the right look I am after before scanning it in and redrawing it on my laptop for the finishing touch ups.

How is KALMAN LEE different from other T-shirt designers? How is KALMAN LEE different from other artists? Every designer/artist is different so in saying that, every t-shirt designer must be. I would have to say it's my style, the techniques I use, my experience that I draw my ideas from.... With a name like mine how can I not be different:)

Who are your competitors? Websites that sell t-shirts designs of course, any place I guess that sells t-shirts. I don't really like to mention names as there are so many out there but I do love Threadless as they have some amazing designs. But how many of my competitors can say in just under one year in operation they have had global sales, had MTV presenters wearing their designs and have had the amazing opportunity to give people like Madonna, Lilly Allen and the Ting Tings t-shirts to enjoy. All in all I think not too bad a start.

How much does KALMAN LEE sell? Right now not as much as we would like but since the launch of our second t-shirt range it has taken off and their is a lot of interest in us producing a kids range, so we keep our selves busy.

How many employees does KALMAN LEE have? For the moment we are just two (my sister and me) but we hope to expand in the future.

Does KALMAN LEE have an international presence? Yes we do, we started out in London but we already had a large fan base downunder seeing as both my sister and I grew up in New Zealand. So far we have been viewed online in 76 countries and that number is ever growing. Our hope is to have our t-shirts in stores around the world.

What does ‘KALMAN LEE’ stand for? Kalman Lee stands for high quality original designs/illustrations that are in the form of wearable artwork without the high price tags.

My Entry titled 'Science Geek' to this month's Threadless Competition!

This is my latest entry to the Threadless 'Geek' Competition. The theme is geek and initially so many words come to mind e.g. glasses, homework, brainy, computers etc. But to me it reminds me of when I was a kid watching one of my all time favourite movies... 'Revenge of the Nerds!' I loved that movie and all the sequels when growing up and I still do, those nerds and geeks turned out to be cool, funky and got all the girls. So in my design titled 'Science Geek' I have got a cool funky geek doing what he loves.

Now if you like my design please vote for it on this link below:

http://threadless.com/submission/232884/Science_Geek

It will be interesting to see how my design goes against all those other amazing artist/designers that send entries to Threadless each week

This Week's Image 'Ludo's Birthday Card'

This week's image is dedicated to my lovely girlfriend's nephew, Ludo. It is Ludo's birthday this weekend and I wanted to send him a personalised card. Ludo and his older brother Milo are keen football fans, especially Chelsea fans and are always outside pratising.......... so what better theme for his birthday card than to draw him as a football superstar!

Ludo if you see this post, I hope you have a very happy happy birthday and I wish I was there to help celebrate your big day!

I am currently rebranding a pet store in Christchurch, New Zealand called 'Bubble & Squeak Pets'. This is one of many projects I am working on at the moment as I (for a while now) design or illustrate for commission.
So if anyone likes my design/illustration style or has an idea they want designed, you can email me at kalmanlee@hotmail.com for any commission design work.

Image of the Week! Horror Theme!

This horror theme of an image is titled 'Open Smile'. I design this scary image for one of the competitions Threadless puts on every month, this month their theme was horror and what's more horrible then a scary creature clawing his way out of your gut.
This is the first time I have entered in to one of Threadless competitions but plan on doing more often.
So what do you think?

Image of the Week!!!

This new illustration of mine is titled 'Punk Bot'. It is one of the many illustration projects I have been working on since I returned back to New Zealand from London.
My idea of drawing a robot which is a punk came from my thought that both come off strong, hard and show no feelings. Punks are know for their disrespect for anything and also know to vandal. unlike my other robot illustrations this one I drew to a 3d feel rather then my usual 2d robots. There will be more 3d style illustrations to come.

Saturday 5 September 2009

Image of the Week, titled Ballet Tree.

This image is titled 'Ballet Tree'. The concept behind this new artwork of mine is drawn from the love of large trees that my lovely girlfriend and I share and the amazing twists and angles of branches which sometimes seem like they form shapes.
My girlfriend and I loved to go walking in parks (back when I was in London) and often we would look at a tree and see faces or whole bodies in strange poses.
Not long ago I attended my first ever ballet at the Royal Ballet Hall in London. While I was enjoying the performance I noticed that some of the poses that the amazing dancers were doing reminded me of some of the trees in the parks that I would go to.

The above image titled 'Ballet Tree' is also one of my new artworks to be on display and up for sale at an exhibition in London on the 12th of September 2009. The exhibition is called 'Becondale House First Art Party' and has a number of other artists work up for viewing.

The 'Becondale House First Art Party' exhibition will be my second exhibition in London and I am currently looking to put my artwork on display in some exhibitions in New Zealand and Australia.

Image of the week and news update!!

I call this image 'Casanova Rooster'. This idea came to me while I was travelling around New Zealand with my lovely girlfriend while staying at a bed and breakfast up in Keri Keri. The lovely owners of the bed and breakfast had six chickens and a very proud rooster in their back garden.
I was watching how the rooster would strut its stuff in front of the six chickens and would go up to each of them which reminded me of the legend of Casanova. Casanova was known for getting any woman he desired but very vain.

Now for my news update...

Since I have been back in the land of the long white cloud (New Zealand), I have travelled all around the North and South islands showing my girlfriend as much as I can in the 3 weeks she was here, for which by the way is not enough time if you want to get in all the amazing and beautiful sights of my home country.

During our travels we saw and did so much great stuff that gave me some exciting ideas for images that I have been working on. So far I have completed 3 new images in 3 days which is a great start and 2 of them will be sent to London (along with some of my other artwork) for another exhibition that is happening in September.

Other then that I am working on the idea to launch a children's clothing range, developing new concepts for my next t-shirt range and looking for employment.

That's all for now but I'll have more updates soon.

Lastest update and Image of the Week!!!

Hi Everyone,

I know it's been quite a long time since my last posting and I apologize for the slackness.

In the last few weeks I did a 10 day Europe trip (mainly by road) going to Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague, Budapest and Athens. From there I flew back to London to get ready for my second t-shirt launch and my first art exhibition.
Both Sharleen and I were not quite sure how the night would go but it was amazing and not only did we sell heaps of t-shirts but most of my artwork that was on sale!
We were so happy that we had a massive turnout and would like to thank all those who came along and showed their support and of course I can't forget the amazing team that helped us on the night as we couldn't of done it without you.

A couple of days after that I flew to Sydney to spend some time with my brother and see about some jobs while I was there before flying back to New Zealand.

I have been back in New Zealand for almost 2 weeks now and have had so many orders come in for t-shirts and commissioned artwork. Sharleen and I are very excited as most of our new range is almost soldout after only launching last month and that people like Madonna, Lily Allen and the Ting Tings are enjoying our t-shirts.

After today I am doing a road trip around the whole of New Zealand and hope to get some ideas for our next range but we pretty much know what concepts we are going with after the amazing response to this new range.

This weeks image of the week is an ad that I designed that will soon be in a student guide handbook in the UK.

That is all the news for now but you can still purchase yourself a Kalman Lee t-shirt from his new or old range at www.kalmanlee.co.uk but better be quick!!!

Cheers

Kalman Lee

Image of the week: Stagman first of the new t-shirt range!

This week I have decided to post up the first design from the new Kalman Lee t-shirt range! This design is titled Stagman.
Recently I have been working flat out so that's the reason for no image of the week last week but this week's blog comes with good news!
The last few weeks I have been lucky enough to setup for Madonna! If you didn't know I work part-time for a stage setup company(doing stuff like lights,pa,stage, dressingrooms etc) and so that is how I was able to give the very first t-shirt(Stagman)from my new range to Madonna.

I have been working part-time as a stage hand for over a year now and have been lucky to work for such artists as: Neil Diamond, The Killers, Kings of Leon, Counting Crows and more recently Britney Spears, Beyonce, Katie Perry and the amazing Madonna!
Another artist I would of loved to been able to work for was the king of pop Michael Jackson, rest in peace Michael.

In a few weeks all the new designs will be going up on my website www.kalmanlee.co.uk and I can't wait for everyone to enjoy the new range.

Saturday 13 June 2009

Image of the Week: Robo-Girl

You can probably tell I spend a lot of my time sketching robots and this week's image Robo-Girl is one of my favourites.
I came up with Robo-Girl not long after I arrived in London and wanted to create a character to use to get back in to my animations.

I have completed four new original t-shirts designs that are going to be on sale soon on our website kalmanlee.co.uk and best to be quick as there will be limited number of these new designs available.

Friday 5 June 2009

Image of the Week: Radio-man Sketches!

This week's image is of some concept sketches I did of a radio-man. I love the old school radios and wanted to do a japanese robot style design, designed with bold sharp lines and the traditional colours (black, white, red, and navy).

Friday 29 May 2009

This Week's Image is called Spagalimis Voucher

Year's ago in Christchurch (NZ) I was asked by the owner of Spagalimis to design a number of promotional materials to promote his special deals and boost business. For those of you who haven't heard of Sapagalimis or their amazing pizzas it's a very well known chain of pizza restaurants in New Zealand and many think it is the best.

The image above is of a $10 dollar voucher I designed for Spagalimis that was sent out to well known companies and firms in the area and all around New Zealand. I designed the voucher to have similar features to the New Zealand $10 note.

On another note, it's note long until our next t-shirt range comes out but that doesn't mean you still can't grab one or more of the firt Kalman Lee t-shirt range, so check it out!

This Weeks Weekly Image: 2002 Calendar Page!

Back in Christchurch(New Zealand)2002 I was working for a printing firm and every year they would produce a calendar to give out to all their clients.
Each year had a different theme or image you had to use in every month. As you can see I was asked to design the month of December and the image that I had to use was a wall with a circle cut out of it.
To my imagination I saw it as a time portal.
I decided for this image I would use my 3d modelling design skills and so I created the futurist hand you see above.

Image of the Week!

I created this poster image for the movie 'The Black Balloon' when I was doing work experience for a media promotional company called Hoo Ha Ltd. While working there I learned so much and it was my first great creative experience since I had arrived in the UK.
'The Black Balloon' was a movie about a family moving to a new town out in the Australian wop wops. The whole story is based on the two brothers, one being 'special' and how they find it's hard to fit in.

Check out all my t-shirt designs

Image of the Week!!! Sketch ideas for a movie poster

This week's image of the week is a series of sketches I did while doing work experience for a company that promotes movies. The brief was to come up with some ideas for the movie poster for a up and coming film called 'The Day'. The movie was a thriller about some kids that turn into killers on new years day. The movie was set out in the wop wops during winter.
